Erkka Nissinen

Helsinki / New York, b. 1975

The video art of Erkka Nissinen is often characterised as absurd. In his strange and provocative works he makes use of unconventional and psychedelic humour and the balance between good and bad taste. The shoddy aesthetic questions the viewer’s understanding of both art and his or her own taste in it. In 2013, Erkka Nissinen received the AVEK prize, which is a significant acknowledgement in Finnish media art. The reasons cited the unfitting nature of the artist: “Although Nissinen’s themes are often current and political, deep down Nissinen is an anarchist and thus politically incorrect. For this very reason Nissinen is a brave artist.”
